One of the Best Batman Stories from DC Comics That You Should Be Reading!

Written by Andre Greenidge.

What happens when there's too many good Batman titles on the shelf?

If you're a fan of the Dark Knight, you've had no shortage of great Batman comics to read over the past several months! Absolute Batman is topping the charts, and rightfully so! The dynamic duo of Jim Lee and Jeph Loeb, team up again in the ongoing Batman title with the sequel, Hush 2. Plus the newest Batman title by superstar artist, Jorge Jimenez and writer Matt Fraction is flying off the shelves like a bat out of hell!

So what happens when there are too many good Batman titles? One stays in the shadows, but it's my job to shine the Batsignal on it and put it on your radar! So which Batman title am I talking about? None other than the longest running Batman comic, Detective Comics!

The current Detective Comics run is written by Tom Taylor. You may have heard of him (Nightwing, Dark Knights of Steel, DCeased, Injustice, to name a few) and illustrated by Mikel Janin, who is becoming one of my favorite Batman artists. Their first story arc is available in trade paperback, Batman Detective Comics: Mercy of the Father. Where Batman must confront his aging and battle weary body. While trying to solve a string of murders where the victims share one thing in common: they were all from the Gotham Juvenile Detention Centre! Action, suspenseful, dramatic, and great character moments make this book a must-read!

But let me bring you up to the newest arc titled, Batman Detective Comics: The Courage Kills! Part 2 just dropped, and so far, it's got everything I want and need in a Batman comic!

  • It's got fear: a Gotham party cruise ship collides with a bigger fishing boat in a foggy Gotham harbor, causing someone to fall overboard!
  • It's got intrigue: what happened to the crew of the ship? What left only a sole survivor, and who left the cryptic message for Gotham City?
  • It's got investigation! Batman, Oracle, and Mr. Terrific put their heads together to figure out happening and how to stop it!
  • It's got action! Batman doing what he does best, saving people, and never giving up!
  • It's got toys! An amazingly drawn submersible Batplane...yes please!
And best of all, it's got Bruce Wayne! The creative team knows that Bruce Wayne is a key part of Batman, and both story arcs utilize him to do things Batman can't! It's what sets this series apart from the other Batman titles on the shelves! Great art, great writing, great character moments, new characters, and all around great storytelling! Don't let this run pass you by!

Issue 1 and 2 are out now in individual comics for The Courage that Kills.

Mercy of the Father is available in trade paperback!
