Iman Vellani Returns With Her First Original Comic Series: Chachu From Image Comics

Local superstar Iman Vellani is back with an exciting brand-new comic series! This August, Vellani makes her solo writing debut at Image Comics (Tiny Onion) with Chachu, an all-new five issue neo-noir miniseries that blends mystery, family drama, and coming-of-age storytelling.

Joining Vellani on the creative team is acclaimed artist Marianna Ignazzi (Exquisite Corpses, Self Help) with colors by Jordie Bellaire (Absolute Wonder Woman, Redlands). Together, they’re bringing a stylish and emotional new mystery series to comic shops everywhere.

Set in 1979, Chachu follows Leila, a 19-year-old Pakistani-Canadian girl obsessed with classic films and pulp detective novels. Hoping to reconnect with her estranged uncle—her “Chachu”—Leila travels to California expecting answers and adventure. Her uncle, once a famous private investigator known for marrying the missing actress he was hired to find, is now semi-retired and living quietly… until his wife mysteriously disappears once again.

What follows is an unexpected road trip investigation filled with family secrets, unresolved grief, and the blurred lines between fantasy and reality. Equal parts neo-noir mystery and emotional character drama, Chachu looks to be one of the most unique new launches of the summer.

Speaking about the project, Vellani shared:

“It’s been an immense privilege to build my first original series alongside such an accomplished roster of collaborators, all of whom challenged and supported me in ways that made this book far better than anything I could’ve imagined on my own or in therapy.”
